How to protect yourself from the coronavirus (12 steps)

There is a lot of misleading and conflicting information around now due to businesses peddling disinformation for financial gain, governments trying to attain control, preserve resources, mitigate economic damage as much as possible and avoid being held accountable for any mistakes they make as well as people with their conspiracy theories and selfish greed trying to take everything they can for themselves. We look at what will really keep you safe during this crisis.

1. Stay Indoors

You put yourself at risk every time you leave the home, if you live on your own or the people you live with never go out, you're very unlikely to catch it in your own home..

2. Wear a mask!

Try to get yourself an N95 mask (or for maximum protection N100), a mask will protect you regardless of what you've read or heard elsewhere. Washing hands is very important but washing your hands won't give you the protection you need on its own, you should also try to wear eye protection if you can, at least some sunglasses

3. Use Bleach & Dettol

We tried different disinfectants and dettol surface cleaner seems to work best. However, you do need to leave it on the surface for at least one minute and don't wipe it dry, just using a slightly damp cloth to spread the dettol so it disinfects the entire surface and don't forget to wear disposable gloves and keep the bottle itself clean. The same applies to any handwash you use, bar soap is fine but if you use a bottle dispenser you need to keep that bottle clean too

Chlorine bleach also kills the COVID-19 coronavirus (Source: CDC). Bleach will take longer to kill the virus (10-60 minutes contact time) - For a really powerful cleaner, dilute bleach with Dettol instead of water. Use bleach undiluted for cleaning the toilet or for floors and surfaces dilute the bleach accordingly. You can also use bleach in the washing machine to disinfect your laundry, try to use at least a 60°C wash and a full cycle, not the quick wash. Use a dryer instead of hanging laundry.

4. Refresh the air and seperate clothes

Keep the air in your home fresh and moving, clean the floors often and have seperate indoor and outdoor clothes. The virus lives on fabric up to 12 hours so keep your outdoor clothes away from anything else and only for going out, then every time you get home take a wash or at least wash your hands and put your indoor clothes on to avoid contaminating the home

5. Stop panic buying

The panic buying isn't making sense, people are panic buying not because of the virus but because of other people are panic buying, it's a ridiculous cycle caused by insecure people that have too much time on their hands as they never had any real value in the first place so were just sat at home anyway. Try sticking to smaller shops and avoid supermarkets as these tend to have baskets rather than trolleys so they keep their shelves stocked a little better than the supermarkets

6. Get a thermometer

The first symptom of the virus is the fever, this usually comes days before any other symptoms so be sure to check your temperature often. Anything over 37.2°C is a fever (armpit, ear or forehead measurement). If you measure orally or by the rectum the reading would be higher (over 37.8°C or 37.5°C-38.3°C respectively) for it to be considered a fever

7. Stop using your water filter

Brita and other water filters remove impurities from tap water such as chlorine, but this chemical is added to tap water to kill bacteria in the water supply. While we would usually recommend that you filter all your tap water, during the COVID-19 outbreak you may want to use the water directly from the tap as the chlorine also kills viruses. Be careful using a water filter, especially if you're sharing a place with others, the water in the filter is stood and someone infected could use the filter

8. Decontaminate masks in the oven

Set your fan oven to 70°C and put your used masks in for 30 minutes. Don't try to wash them or disinfect them, it will damage the fibers that catch the virus.

9. Use ozone and ultraviolet light

We were using ozone and UVC light to keep our offices clear of the virus from the very start of the outbreak and following decontaminating masks in the oven, we also treat them with ozone and UVC light to ensure there is no possibility of the virus remaining on the masks. If you can source yourself some quality germicidal UVC bulbs or a powerful ozone generator you will be able to increase your level of protection from the virus substantially.

Be careful using ozone or UVC light, both are very dangerous, ozone is extremely toxic and UVC light damages DNA killing the virus but is therefore also dangerous to humans, do not expose yourself to or look at the UVC light and do not risk inhaling any toxic ozone. The exposure to UVC light needs to be prolonged to successfully kill the virus.

10. Stop doing the washing up

If you have a dishwasher, try to stick to using it for everything and avoid washing up. Use only the "super" or "intensive" wash programmes as these wash at over 70°C which is too hot for hand washing and the dishwasher takes much longer so no virus can survive.

11. Wash your hands and wear gloves

Wash your hands with antibacterial handwash or traditional bar soap and sanitise your hands with at least 70% ethanol-based hand sanitiser but be careful how often you sanitise as the ethanol will dry your skin. Wear disposable gloves for handling deliveries, shopping and cooking. Do not re-use any gloves or use non-disposable gloves.

The same logic applies to cleaning, use disposable kitchen roll over cloth for cleaning and drying to prevent the virus getting onto a cloth and spreading everywhere. Wash bath towels after each use and wash face and hand towels every other day.

Hand Sanitizer and Gloves

12. Most Important: Strengthen your last line of defence

If you do catch the virus and you neglected your immune system, instead focusing your time, effort and money on panic buying or anything else, then you're going to realise how stupid you've been and regret your actions. The best thing to prepare your immune system for a fight against COVID-19 is supplemental zinc, it's clear that zinc has a profound effect on the immune systems response to the virus as well as a direct effect on coronavirus. (Source: ResearchGate Publication)

James A. Robb, a pathologist, and molecular virologist from the University of Colorado School of Medicine MD, who, while at the University of California, San Diego in the 1970s, did pioneering work in understanding coronaviruses. He wrote:

"Stock up now with zinc lozenges. These lozenges have been proven to be effective in blocking coronavirus (and most other viruses) from multiplying in your throat and nasopharynx. Use as directed several times each day when you begin to feel ANY “cold-like” symptoms beginning." - (Source: UC Health)

As well as zinc, of course vitamin C also helps to boost the immune system and ready its defences. Take a considerable amount (much higher than your RDA, but not beyond safe limits) to force your immune system to be in its optimal state and ensure the quickest response to the virus. Remember, this is a new virus and it has an invisible incubation period, so the speed your immune system reacts is going to be vital in ensuring the best recovery and outcome

Will taking these steps prevent me catching the coronavirus?

These steps are what we consider "reasonable measures" in response to the virus outbreak and reduce your risk significantly (aside from setting up an isolation chamber, wearing a hazmat suit and full apocalyptic oxygen-fed mask). However, this is a highly contagious virus and it's likely that you will catch it, which is why step 12 is so important.
